Ever wondered, how long does it take to learn piano? I’ve created a video that talks about common mistakes students make when learning piano.
Just like learning anything in life, if you want to improve your skills you need to put in the time. Now, the question is…how much time is that?
Well, it depends. In the video I talk about how the question “how long does it take to learn piano” is not really the right question.
Instead, you need to focus on a few other piano practice elements. Watch this video to learn more.

In today’s lesson, I will be teaching you about the factors that determine how long it will take you to learn piano. Whether you are self taught beginner using online resources or taking lessons from a teacher, these factors are something you want to be aware of when learning piano. This is probably the most useful for adults who struggle with time constraint issues. Realistically, it can take months to get the groundwork laid to learning piano, and take years or even a lifetime to master.

How long does it REALLY take to learn piano?
I get this question ALL the time from students. And I used to ask it myself. Unfortunately, most teachers just give the answer “it depends”.
Now… is that true? Yes, it does depend. But just because that answer is RIGHT doesn’t mean that answer is HELPFUL. I’d rather give an answer that actually means something and can give new students at least an idea on how long it takes based on how much you practice.
To do this, in the video we’re going to break down piano into three categories:
2. Playing by Ear
3. Learning Songs
For each of these categories, we’re going to break it down into an “if X then Y in Z time”. For example, “If you practice X minutes a day, you will get to Y level in Z months”.
This way you can really see “ok, if I just practice a certain amount of time a day in a certain way, I can be confident I’ll be at a certain level.
It takes the “it depends” answer and really breaks it down to something meaningful that you can actually follow.
