Many adults would like to be able to sit down at the piano and play a few tunes just for their own amazement – they really want to learn piano. Many professionals have told me that after a hard day at the hospital or office they just need to relax, and playing the piano is one of the most soothing things they can do — not just the physical act of playing the keyboard, but the satisfaction of hearing beautiful sounds of the songs they love coming from that old musical instrument of theirs!
Many of us took piano lessons when we were kids, and most of us didn’t follow through but got busy with other things such as careers and marriage and all the things we do in our lives, but would love to get back to the piano learn piano and play some popular songs or maybe some old classical pieces we learned way back when.
The great thing about learning to play chord piano is that you can combine your ear with your knowledge of chords to find all the piano notes and the piano keys on the keyboard. Playing by ear is related to playing using chords, but it adds the dimension of understanding to the equation of learning piano.
Some of us came through the “backdoor of music” – in other words, we learned to play piano by ear or by chords before we learned to read music and all the music theory behind the musical notes. And that’s great. I later earned my Masters Degree — but at 7 years of age my piano teacher – poor Mrs. Graham — would have sworn under oath that I never would be able to play the piano at all, let alone learn piano in an advanced way.

The C Major Scale – Piano Lessons
The C major scale is usually the first scale piano players learn. It has 8 notes, and starts and ends on C. They are c -d -e -f – a-b- c.
Visually, it’s probably the easiest, because it is all white notes. As long as you know where C is, you will be able to play the correct notes.
The part that can be tricky is getting the correct fingering. The thing to remember is that the thumbs and third fingers are the ones doing the tucking or crossing.
The right hand starts with the thumb on C and continues stepping up to the third finger. After that, the thumb tucks under the middle finger to the next note (F) and this allows the rest of the fingers to get in place. After the thumb plays, continue stepping up to C. To come back down the scale, reverse the fingering.
The left hand starts with the pinky on C and steps up to the thumb which is on G. Then the middle finger crosses over the thumb and plays the A. The pointer finger and thumb finish up the scale.
C Major Scale fingering for the right hand
1-2- 3-1- 2-3-4-5
C Major Scale fingering for the left hand
5-4- 3- 2-1- 3-2-1
By the end of this easy lesson for beginners, you will have insight on the free resources that are out there that can help you learn and practice piano online. These include practice exercises, lessons, and sheet music.
You can learn even more about piano and music from my website http://www.pianolessonsontheweb.com
Musictheory.net – This website is one of my favorites for free practice exercises and lessons. The lessons are pretty bare bones with text and images, but do a good job of explaining the basic concepts behind music theory. You can learn about the staff, clefs, ledger lines, note durations, measures, time signatures and the most basic things you need to know in the beginning stages of learning piano. The cool thing is you can download the free apps so you can take your learning on the go. Also included are great exercises, which are especially helpful if you are learning how to read music or identify intervals. Musictheory.net is highly recommended for beginner piano students.
Teoria.com is another great website that is more geared toward practice tools than the lessons themselves. It has a lot of exercises that musictheory.net doesn’t have.
YouTube is another great website to learn piano and music. There are a few great channels out there and here is what I recommend.
LessonsOnTheWeb (my channel)
I think my channel is the best for beginners who are looking for a straightforward course to help them learn piano. Intermediate Piano Lessons 1 – Learn How to Play Piano Better with Good Practice. This is a new series for intermediate students. It will review the aspects of good piano practice and what things you should be including in your practice.
The Keys of Good Practice are as Follows:
1.Consistency of practice is very important as it will allow you to form good practice habits.
2. You want to focus on what you are working on. Create goals and concentrate on what you are doing.
4. Change things up for a little bit for variety.
5. Get 15-30 minutes for beginners; 30-60 for intermediate; 2-4 hours for advanced.
In terms of consistency, it is always better to practice for a smaller amount of time everyday than it is to practice for many hours a couple of days. Make sure to develop good practice habits and make practicing a priority. Pretend that your time at the piano is a class that you need to graduate from school. Don’t skip it unless absolutely necessary. Have goals when you practice and consistently focus on those goals each time you practice.
You want to start with the most difficult material since your levels of concentration will be the highest when you first sit down at the piano. Some of the things you should be practicing include scales, arpeggios, and Hanon exercises. Learning your scales will help your fingering as well as understand what notes exist within a certain key. This piano lesson is only recommended if you have learned to very basics of playing the piano. Coming up with a good piano practice routine is essential and will ensure you get the most out of your piano lessons. Polishing your practice routine is a solid first step at moving to be an intermediate to advanced piano student.
