This is an issue that really gets me worked up sometimes…when people think that “it’s too late” to learn piano as an adult. I can tell you from experience it’s ABSOLUTELY not true.

I’ve seen time and time again adult beginner piano students absolutely kill it on the keys! But that being said, there are 3 key points that really separate the adult beginners who make it and the adult beginners who don’t. And that’s what I hope to cover in the video.

Basically, kids have some advantages. They have more free time. They have parents that encourage (or threaten!) them to practice. They have fewer other things going on.

But there are also some advantages you have as an adult! We’ll go over them more in the video. Think about those 3 keys and make sure you’re following each of them as an adult piano learner. It’s really what separates the ones that get good from the ones who quit.

Get Your Mindset Right to Learn Piano

Scott has been stewing over the last few months as to why some students are able to progress and sail through the method, while others, who were still working through it, were going through it “kicking and screaming.” There was no correlation between who asked more questions, who had previous experience, how old they were, etc. Scott found that it largely had to do with their mindset.

First, when any student starts, they come in with a mindset, or pre-conceived notion, which typically is whatever it is you’re trying to tackle, for instance, having fun playing the piano. You then take an action to complete that notion, such as practicing or enrolling in the piano lessons. Finally, those actions will lead to results.

What Scott is finding out, the mindset that is brought into these Piano In A Flash piano lesson is incredibly consequential as to how they proceed. Scott has created several mental baskets many of his students fall into.

First, the “this method works…but it won’t work for me.” Scott refers to this basket as the “none-confident ones. Second, those who come in thinking “i’ve tried to play in the past… this is my LAST chance!” Finally, the last basket is those who think “this is all HOGWASH! (but I wish i could play like that…)” These are the mindsets of those who typically struggle to work through their lessons.

Next, Scott covers the mindset of those who seem to progress through his online piano lessons and stay positive and energized throughout. These students tell themselves, “I am coachable and ready to take instruction!” They don’t think that it will take a miracle or that Scott has a magic wand, but simply believe that if they apply themselves, that they too can join the thousands of other students that have also gone through Scott’s method and succeeded in learning AND enjoying playing the piano through these online piano lessons. These students stay calm, work at their own pace knowing that it is not going to happen over night. They ask questions, enjoy the process of learning, and remain receptive.

As a reminder, Scott finishes with the old adage of “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Learning the piano does take time, but by assuming that you are willing to trust the process, and taking the small, digestible bites of instruction throughout his piano lessons, you too can learn to play and enjoy the piano like thousands of students before you.

From the 2014 MTNA presentation in Chicago: “Amazing Uses of the iPad and Other Mobile Devices”, Dr. Mario Ajero does a comparative demonstration between three applications for video conferencing in the context of a piano lesson: FaceTime, Skype, and Hangouts. He is assisted by his son and piano student, Antonio “Nio” Ajero who is using a third generation iPad to connect.
