Many of us have an understanding of jazz vocabulary, but we have trouble using that vocabulary to create deep effective music that speaks fluidly from our soul. In this video, I’m giving you a preview of 12 lessons that I’ll be doing over the coming weeks. This video is for Lewis, one of my students in the UK, who is a great pianist, technically, but has a lot to learn about musicality. The 12 lessons will be designed to strip away the excess notes and space-filler, and morph the remaining conceptual knowledge into a machine that can translate emotion and feeling directly from your heart through the piano to the world around you.

“Yesterday” Beatles – Piano Lessons

Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott and his guest David Tolley, demonstrate how to play The Beatles classic hit, Yesterday. David describes how he personalizes the tune by beginning with a single note melody line. Then he demonstrates how you can fill in by adding chords by rolling up the notes that comprise the chords. Later he uses block chords instead of the rolling chords for a little variety.

David also reveals some techniques to add interest to the right hand melody part. He shows you how you can to add grace notes, run ups (arpeggios) and octaves just to name a few.

Some of the left hand variations shared include: block chords, oompahs, arpeggios and a changing of the rhythm.

Scott’s life goal is help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible.

Scott Houston is the host of The Piano Guy television series on Public Television and has taught hundreds of thousands of folks like yourself, how to have some fun on their piano or keyboard. He wants to help you get there too—as quickly as possible.

Improvisation – Piano Lessons

Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott shows you how to get started improvising on a piano.

Here’s a great tip to try. Use the notes: C, D, Eb, E, G, A
to improvise with your right hand as you play the blues chord changes with your left hand. You will never hit a “bad” sounding note that way, and can improvise all night.

Chords for your left hand part:
C7=C,E, G,Bb
F7=F,A,C, Eb,
G7=G,B,D, F
