If you consider yourself a beginner and have never learned to read music before, then this lesson is for you. This is part 1 of 4 total videos. The other three parts will be exclusive to the LessonsOnTheWeb Academy. Reading music is essential for someone to learn how to play piano. With some new techniques and equipment, I was able to put together this video to best describe how to read music on the Treble Clef.

Notes:
The staff is made of five lines and four spaces in between those lines. A note can fall on a line or space and depending on which line or space will tell you which note to play and where on the piano to play that note. You can tell a note is on a line if a line is going directly through a note. You can tell a note is on a space if the note is between two spaces. The treble clef is also known as the G clef because the center of the clef points to the line G. The Treble clef is usually played with the right hand and contains notes mostly to the right of middle C. The lines of the treble clef from the bottom to the top are E, G, B, D and F. The spaces of the treble clef from the bottom to the top are F.A. C and E. If you put the lines and spaces together, it goes in music alphabetical order E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F. Being able to identify where notes are on both the keyboard and staff is very important in learning to read music and playing the piano. Make sure to practice note reading daily until you have it mastered.

Cyndi Lauper Time After Time – Piano Lessons

Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott and guest David Tolley discuss playing the Cyndi Lauper hit, Time After Time. This tune is a great one to learn because the chord changes are pretty simple. You really utilize the sustain pedal.

David shares some ideas for ways to make the song “your own.” He demonstrates some options to change up the melody line: playing it one note at a time, playing in octaves, using chords under the melody line, arpeggiating from the top down or the bottom up.

Scott’s life goal is to help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible.

The video concludes with a great performance of David Tolley playing his arrangement of “Time After Time” on piano.

Scott Houston is the host of The Piano Guy television series on Public Television and has taught hundreds of thousands of folks like yourself, how to have some fun on their piano or keyboard. He wants to help you get there too—as quickly as possible.

Many of us have an understanding of jazz vocabulary, but we have trouble using that vocabulary to create deep effective music that speaks fluidly from our soul. In this video, I’m giving you a preview of 12 lessons that I’ll be doing over the coming weeks. This video is for Lewis, one of my students in the UK, who is a great pianist, technically, but has a lot to learn about musicality. The 12 lessons will be designed to strip away the excess notes and space-filler, and morph the remaining conceptual knowledge into a machine that can translate emotion and feeling directly from your heart through the piano to the world around you.
