Carole King – So Far Away – Piano Lessons

Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott shows you how to play, So Far Away, a Carole King hit!

He shares the bare bone minimum that you need to do to play both the melody and the chord changes by focusing on the song structure. Scott starts by playing the one note melody line. Make sure that you are using the lead sheet as a guide only. You want to try to play it the way you whistle or hum it. Then he moves to the chord changes. Scott demonstrates how to figure out and play a A sus chord.

Next scott works through the bridge. He suggests that when you put your hands together you might want to start by playing just the root of the chord. This imitates a bass player, so play it down an octave. Do this makes it much easier to play with both hands. The sound is not quite as full but it sounds pretty good. Try it!

Scott’s life goal is to help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible.

Scott Houston is the host of The Piano Guy television series on Public Television and has taught hundreds of thousands of folks like yourself, how to have some fun on their piano or keyboard. He wants to help you get there too—as quickly as possible.

James Bond Theme – Piano Lessons

Improvisation – Jazz Piano Lessons – Sounds Good at Slow Tempo

Do your fingers seem to only have one speed—slow?
Want something bluesy you can play slowly and still sound great?

Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott shows you how to use a 12 measure pattern to create a great bluesy sound that sounds great played slowly.

The example for these piano lessons are taught in the key of C two octaves down from Middle C.

The order to play the chords follows the 12 measure pattern:
C-C-C-C-F-F-C-C-G-F-C-C

Frequently you will see the C7, F7, G7 played, but today we are going to make it even simpler and use a variation of the C, F and G Chords for your left hand part.

We will just be using the two outside notes (removing the middle note of the triad) of the chords for this pattern.

C = C,E,G: We will play the C & G.
F = F,A,C: We will play just the F & C.
G = G,B,D: We will play the G & D.

After playing the two outside notes, we will keep the pinkie on the root but will then move the thumb up one step and play that. So the pattern will look like this:

1. C & G and C & A
2. C & G and C & A
3. C & G and C & A
4. C & G and C & A
5. F & C and F & D
6. F & C and F & D
7. C & G and C & A
8. C & G and C & A
9. G & D and G & E
10. F & C and F & D
11. C & G and C & A
12. C & G and C & A

Another way to look at it is:

C & G and C & A (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 4
F & C and F & D (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 2
C & G and C & A (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 2
G & D and G & E (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 1
F & C and F & D (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 1
C & G and C & A (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 2

Then repeat over and over again! Added bonus—at the end of each 12 measure pattern before you go back up to the top, you can play a G augmented (G aug) F, B, D# in your right hand

Practice playing the left hand pattern solely until you get to the point that you can play it pretty easily without having to think too hard or until your hand has that muscle memory.

Once you get the left hand pattern down, you are ready to tackle the right hand part. With your right hand, you will be improvising. Just stick to all the white notes with the exception of the Bb. If you want to, you can also include the Eb. If you stick to playing only those keys you will never hit a clam.

The key is to keep your pattern in the left hand playing slowly and consistently at the same tempo.

Have fun with this slow blues pattern. It is a great chance to practice your improvising!

Jailhouse Rock – Piano Lessons

In this video, Scott Houston, “The Piano Guy” shows you how to play “Jailhouse Rock” on piano. The song was made famous by Elvis. Instead of the way Scott usually break down a tune, for this one he simply is going to try to imitate a bass sound with a piano.

For the melody line we want to try to imitate someone singing it. We will not be playing this tune actually as written in the lead sheet as it would put you all to sleep.

This is a blues tune, and typical chords will be used. In addition to the chords, Scott will demonstrate how to use the “slide” technique to imitate the bass part. Imagine plucking the strings on a bass. Houston has his digital piano split so that the left hand is set on a picked bass sound and the right hand a piano sound. To play the baseline Scott shows you how to step-by-step play the root of the chord utilizing the slide technique.

Houston will also teach you a left hand pattern where you simply are spelling out the F chord.

Chord Finder – Piano Lessons

Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott shows you how to quickly find the notes that comprise a chord that you do not know already.

For this demonstration, Scott will use an aid called a chord wand. Using the chord wand is a very handy way to learn any new chord you don’t yet know. You can simply eave it at your piano, and you’ll never have to look elsewhere to learn a chord again!

The chord wand gives you a fast and very graphical way to learn what particular notes are in a chord. It’s very user-friendly in that it takes no batteries, and you literally place it right on your keyboard to have it show you what notes are in a chord. You simply align the ruler with whatever the root note is in your chord, then let it show you the remaining notes in whatever chord you are trying to look up. Although not needed as it is simple to use, there are VERY detailed instructions that come along with it.

Beyond the simpler 3 and 4 note chords, the chord wand can also show you almost any crazy alteration you will ever come across. I’d be shocked if you ever found a chord symbol that this couldn’t help you with. It’s deceptively simple design masks the huge amount of help it will provide you forever and ever as you continue on in your knowledge of chords and chord symbols.
