Let’s take a look at two simple 7th chords in a couple keys and use this to build those chords. If you know the notes in you major scales all you need to do is count up from your root note to the 7th, relative to that key. Once you locate that 7 note drop it a semi-tone and make it a flat. But, when it comes to making a minor chord all that needs to be done is drop the 3rd note in your triad a semi-tone as well.

The piano is a great instrument to play in a band or as a solo act. Why? Because you can play both the melody and the rhythm on your own. One of the biggest struggles as a beginner pianist or someone who’s pushing through to the next level of the piano is syncing up your left and right hand. But once you perfect this craft your left hand becomes the best support for your right hand. The left hand can play simple octaves or broken arpeggios. But, before you start jumping into more advanced methods with the left hand, start simple, let it become the best support as possible, so your right hand can free flow, exploring the melody of the music you’re playing.

It’s time to take a step outside of the major keys and look at playing some blues as jazz using minor and flat notes. Once you find your way around the black keys there’s a lot of cool patterns that can fall into place.

I spent a great many years feeling confused by inversions. Because my piano beginnings were based on classical training, I had to play them a great deal. I am thankful for this now because I see the greater picture and realize that all those tedious inversion practices lead me toward being able to play music I loved!
